Clostridium difficile
Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is a bacterium that
produces toxins that cause diarrhea. It is
usually associated with taking antibiotics.
Symptoms
- Watery diarrhea
- Abdominal pain/tenderness
- Fever
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea

Additional Complications
C. difficile can cause irritation of the
intestines. This irritation can damage the
intestines, which may require surgery. In
rare cases, C. difficile can even cause death.
Risk Factors
- Taking antibiotics
- Having surgery
- Being in a health care facility for an
extended period of time
- Having a serious, underlying illness
- Advanced age

Treatment
C. difficile will sometimes resolve in two to
three days after you have stopped taking
antibiotics. C. difficile disease can usually
be treated with other antibiotics, such as
Flagyl and Vancomycin.
