How to Wrap a Miracle
In November 2003, seventeen-year-old Bethanie Malone was diagnosed with leukemia. She believed she would spend her last Christmas in a hospital bed. Surrounded by her loving and supportive family, Bethanie, always thinking of others, regretted that she was unable to purchase presents for them. This got Bethanie thinking.
Bethanie knew that a significant number of children and teenagers were in the same situation as she was and she wanted to make their holiday experience better. The idea for Miracle Wraps was born. Bethanie spent the coming months sketching ideas for play money that she hoped would one day be used in a hospital “mall,” where children could “purchase” donated gifts for their loved ones.
Bethanie’s inspirational dedication to the project, with the help of contributions from donors and staff, made Miracle Wraps a reality. The teenager who was not supposed to live to see another Christmas was able (from her hospital bed, brought down to the event) to cut the ribbon marking the first ever Miracle Wraps. Bethanie watched with joyous satisfaction as the patients of Hasbro Children’s Hospital celebrated Christmas, Hanukkah and the holiday spirit with thoughtful purchases for their loved ones.
Bethanie passed away shortly after Miracle Wraps was realized, just five days after that Christmas. However, she was able to witness the smiles she had placed on the faces of other kids who were celebrating the holidays in the hospital, something that she never thought she would live to experience.
In order to continue Bethanie’s legacy, we need your help. To give to the Miracle Wraps Mall, please make a donation to our holiday fund, which supports the Miracle Wraps program.
